DOE Efficient New Home (Zero Energy Ready)

Every Everlasting home is built to Zero Energy Ready standards, and homeowners can optionally certify through the U.S. Department of Energy program. Everlasting has certified multiple homes and received Housing Innovation Special Honors Recognition in 2023.

RESNET HERS rated

Third-party closed-door testing measures envelope leakage, heating and cooling systems, thermostats, lighting and appliances. A HERS rating runs from 0 to 150 or higher, where lower is better. Most Everlasting homes score in the 40 range — roughly 60% more efficient than a conventional home.

Efficiency is a resilience feature

The usual argument for efficiency is the utility bill. The better argument, in Texas and California, is what happens when the power goes out. Because a Passive House regulates its own temperature through the envelope rather than the equipment, an Everlasting Passive House stays at a liveable temperature for days or even weeks after a grid failure, with continuous fresh air throughout.

Because demand is so low, the mechanical systems are small by comparison to conventional construction, and only a limited number of solar panels are needed to reach Net Zero — or eventually Net Positive.

It stays liveable. Because the envelope itself regulates temperature rather than the HVAC system, a Passive House built by Everlasting Homes will hold a liveable temperature for days or even weeks after a grid failure, with continuous fresh air. That is a resilience benefit as much as an energy one.

Most Everlasting homes score in the 40 range on the RESNET HERS index, which equates to roughly 60% greater energy efficiency than a conventional home. In August 2023, Everlasting Homes was named RESNET Builder of the Month for a home that scored 42, with annual energy cost savings of more than $2,300.

Far fewer than you would expect. Because a SCIP envelope cuts heating and cooling demand so sharply, HVAC and mechanical systems are small by comparison to conventional construction, and only a limited number of solar panels are needed to reach Net Zero or eventual Net Positive status.

Everlasting builds with non-toxic Structural Concrete Insulated Panel construction combined with other non-VOC-emitting technologies. Premium recycled materials can be requested where LEED certification is a goal.
